Lesson Plans

Addition Stories - In this SIOP-based lesson plan students deepen their understanding of the concept of addition through oral storytelling with the use of manipulatives. They then connect addition stories to math equations and write the equations.
Addition/Subtraction Game - This is a group activity that provides review and drill in the format of a game for learning facts in subtraction and addition that appeals to multilevel and multi-grade situations. The students get so caught up in the game they consider it an exciting challenge rather than a drill or review.
Area/Volume - Many students have a difficult time understanding the concepts of area and volume. Textbooks have pictures which don't always allow the students to grasp the ideas. This activity takes away the abstract idea and replaces it with a concrete model.
Base 4 - In this activity, students use manipulatives to understand the concept of counting in Base 4.
Bean Toss - Many students are not abstract thinkers. Using lima beans which have been spray painted on one side to represent positive and negative numbers is a concrete reference for the concept.  The students then discover the rules themselves which leads to increased comprehension and retention.
Brain Teasers - Twenty brain teasers that will help your students with critical reasoning skills. Although it is elementary-based, it would serve well for secondary ELL students also.
Brain Teasers 2 - Five additional brain teasers (in case you haven't had enough).
Calculator Patterns - This lesson was designed to allow young children to explore number patterns and relationships while introducing them to the calculator at the same time.
Comparison - This SIOP-based lesson plan has students compare 2 numbers and record their strategies.
Concept Review - This is a fun card game that helps students review basic concepts.
Cookies! - Learning to make cookies is a fun activity that allows a teacher to use inductive reasoning as well as reading, math, and writing. This activity also will help enhance the students’ self-concept and understanding of the importance of learning basic reading, math, and writing skills.

Fractions and more! - These are multiple SIOP-based lesson plans that deal with addition, subtraction, fractions, etc.
Integers - In this SIOP-based lesson plan, students compare and order integers.
Multiplication Tables - This is a chart which gives the multiplication tables from 0-12
Multiplication Tables 2-
This chart gives multiplication tables from 12-20.
Number Placement
- This is a PowerPoint presentation that provides a pretty nice explanation of the placement of numbers to 1 million.
Problem Solving with the Sports Page - Realizing that my students’ knowledge of sports is limited, I decided to suit my purposes in problem solving yet also help them additionally in their understanding of the fundamentals of various sports. It is definitely a high interest area, and motivating the students to participate in the activity has been easily accomplished.
Ratios - The purpose of this activity is to provide students with a concrete introduction to the concept of ratios. Ratios can be a difficult idea for students to grasp. Spending time manipulating "real" objects provides a tangible reference when later dealing with the concept in either an abstract or practical fashion.
Slope - In this SIOP-structured lesson, students identify and model how to find the slope of a line.
Tangrams - Often when students are introduced to tangrams, they are asked to put the pieces together to form a square.  This is often a difficult and frustrating task because they have no background as to how the pieces fit together. The purpose of this activity is to provide students with some insight as to how the tangram pieces fit together, and to stimulate their interest in forming shapes and exploring patterns using the tangram pieces.
